There is oil in every timber finish. You never think about it, but it is there, keeping the finish flexible and clear for decades. Australian sun takes it out — not over decades, over summers. Forty degrees through a window, day after day, bakes it out from the outside in.
Once the oil is gone, the resin left behind goes brittle and micro-cracks form. Too small to see. That is when moisture starts walking through them, and that is what a white ring actually is: water trapped underneath a finish that stopped protecting the timber years ago.
Here is the part most people never get told. Petroleum jelly, the fix half the internet recommends, cannot get through the finish either — the molecules are too large. It sits on top, holds dust, goes cloudy, and blocks anything better from reaching the timber afterwards.

- Check the surface: fingernail along an inside edge. Grain means real timber and this works. Perfectly smooth plastic means laminate — this will not help.
- Patch-test: a small amount somewhere hidden, and check the colour before you continue.
- Apply: dry cloth to lift loose dust — no soap, no water — then brush a thin layer with the grain.
- Wait and buff: 15–20 minutes, buff off every bit of excess, let it feel dry before you use the surface.

What this will not do:
Oak & Amber feeds and seals a finish. It does not repair structural damage, refill deep gouges or reverse a dark water ring — a dark ring means moisture reached the timber itself and that damage can be permanent. It will not work on laminate, thermofoil or plastic veneer, and it is not suitable for suede or nubuck. Cracked joints, loose legs and split panels are a restorer's job. Patch-test every unfamiliar finish.
